Effect of pond ash on ground water quality: a case study
نویسندگان
چکیده
The potential problems and their consequences due to fly ash disposal have been well studied around the world. Ash pond is a common available disposal facility for thermal power plants. The pond ash is subjected to weathering and the ions present in ash migrate to the soil and subsequently to the ground water over a period of time. A study has been carried out at Vijayawada Thermal Power Station (VTPS), Andhra Pradesh, India, to monitor the ground water quality in order to determine the potential impact of ash ponds. It has been found that ground water quality is deteriorated due to the presence of fly ash ions (macro and micro such as Fe, Ca, Mg etc.) which were leached out from the ash up to some extent. The contamination is likely to increase in the case of toxic and other ions with the passage of time. The presence of vegetative cover and plant growth on the down stream slope and fly ash ponds which are covered by soil may effectively control the leaching of ions. Introduction

Shrimp Culture Impact on the Surface and Ground Water of Bangladesh
A case study was carried out to see the impacts of shrimp culture on the surface (pond) and ground water (tube-well) quality in three coastal sub-districts of Bagherhat Sadar, Rampal and Morrelganj of Bangladesh. The people of Rampal (100%), Morrelgonj (87.5%) and Bagherhat (75.5%) expressed that salinity of both surface and ground water increased after shrimp culture, and water becomes more tu...
متن کاملNutrient and Bacterial Transport in Runoff from Soil and Pond Ash Amended Feedlot Surfaces
The addition of pond ash (fly ash that has been placed in evaporative ponds and subsequently dewatered) to feedlot surfaces provides a healthier environment for livestock and economic advantages for the feedlot operator. However, the water quality effects of pond ash amended surfaces are not well understood. The objectives of this field investigation were to: (1) compare feedlot soil properties...
متن کاملEffect of Pond Ash and RBI Grade 81 on Properties of Subgrade Soil and Base Course of Flexible Pavement
This paper deals with use of pond ash and RBI Grade 81 for improvement in CBR values of clayey soil and grade-III materials used for base course of flexible pavement. The pond ash is a thermal power plant waste and RBI Grade 81 is chemical soil stabilizer. The geotechnical properties like Maximum Dry Density (MDD), Optimum Moisture Content (OMC), Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), CBR value...

Main perennial rivers of Gujarat, Tapi, Narmada, Mahi and Sabarmatiare meeting Arabian Sea in Gulf of Khambhat. The out flow of Mahi River intothe sea is decreased due to construction of dams like Bajaj Sagar, Kadana, Panamand Wanakbori weir. So, Tidal effect of sea and sea water intrusion is beingincreased on landward side. Moreover, due to erratic nature of rainfall andimproper management of ...
متن کاملA Parametric Study for Identification of the Variables in Tidally Affected Pond Systems (TECHNICAL NOTE)
In this paper a parametric study was undertaken to quantify the sensitivity Abstract to a wide range of coastal detention pond systems dealing with tidal influence to store surface flood water so as to produce general guidance on the importance of the catchment and pond variables. In this process a specified pond design return period was selected for which the system was to be designed. The pon...
